About Castle Rock, Colorado

In 2019, Castle Rock’s population was  62,417. The city is the county seat of Douglas County. Looking above the city is the prominent castle-shaped rock butte, which inspired the town’s name. First populated by the native peoples of the plains, the settlers that followed were drawn by the Homestead Act of 1862. It was the mining of rhyolite stone that attracted the first residents. Several buildings, such as the Castle Rock Depot, the First National Bank of Douglas County, and the Keystone Hotel are registered as historic buildings. The city was incorporated in 1874, at which time Douglas County selected it as the official county seat, due to its central location.

The city sits at an elevation of 6,224 feet, near the Rampart Range, in the Rocky Mountains. East Plum Creek flows through the city. Many residents who live in Castle Rock make the 20-minute commute to Colorado Springs.

Local attractions include Castlewood Canyon State Park, Rock Park, and the Cherokee Ranch & Castle.
